Soldier, teacher killed in ambush in Philippines


MANILA: A soldier and a teacher were killed after unidentified armed men ambushed a pick-up truck carrying government troops in Lanao del Sur province in the southern Philippines on Saturday (June 27), police said Monday.

Police said the attack occurred when government troops were returning to their camp after conducting a security operation. At least 10 armed men opened fire on the vehicle, leaving one soldier killed and the driver injured.

A female teacher riding a tricycle sustained a gunshot and died at the scene.

Police investigators recovered a rifle grenade and empty shell casings of ammunition, believed to have been fired from rifles. Investigations are underway. - Xinhua
