YANGON: The Yangon region will purchase and install solar-powered street lights during the 2026–2027 fiscal year using regional government funds to improve nighttime visibility and support law enforcement operations.
The announcement was made during the seventh day of the second regular session of the third Yangon Region Hluttaw on June 23, when Regional Minister for Electricity, Energy, Industry and Transport Dr Myo Thaw responded to a question raised by U Thein Naing, the Hluttaw representative for Kyauktada Township Constituency No. 1, regarding plans to install new street lights and replace damaged ones across the region.
Dr Myo Thaw said the Yangon Region Government would continue allocating funds for street-light maintenance in the coming years, with approximately five percent of the region's street lights to be replaced annually.
He said the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) is installing street lights in townships across the region based on the availability of annual budget allocations, while giving priority to major roads and streets that currently lack lighting.
The corporation is also carrying out the replacement of defective bulbs and repairing damaged but serviceable street lights each fiscal year.
Hluttaw MP U Thein Naing said that by replacing and installing street lights, "if broken street lights in some townships and wards across Yangon Region are repaired, and lighting is installed in areas where there are no street lights, it will help reduce potential crimes and further strengthen law enforcement.”
According to the latest survey, Yangon Region has 47,062 street lights installed across its 14 districts, including 7,230 lights located along road medians.
Regional government data also show that 700 street lights were purchased for repair and replacement during the 2025–2026 fiscal year. - Eleven Media/ANN
