YANGON: Large crowds gathered to witness the reopening of Thingan Nyinaung High School in Myawaddy Township, which had been closed for more than two years due to clashes in the vicinity.
The ceremony on Wednesday (June 3) was attended by BGF Area (4) Commander U Saw Mothon, Myawaddy District Education Officer U Saw Mothon, District Education Officer U Than Shwe and other officials.
As peace and stability began to return to the region, the school, which had been in a state of disrepair, was renovated to enable children to join in the 2026/2027 academic year.
During the winter, General Saw Chit-thu, Lieutenant General Saw Mothon, and education volunteers donated money to repair the school's roofing, ceiling, furniture and walls that were damaged by artillery shells, as well as to instal a solar power system to provide electricity.
June 1 had been designated as the school opening date for the 2026/2027 academic year nationwide for both public and private schools.
Myawaddy Than Nyi Naung High School used to have over 1,000 students, but this year, when the school reopened, only over 200 students enrolled.
U Moe Kyaw, the township education officer, said that out of 115 government schools in Myawaddy district, 76 had already reopened, and that there were more schools to open.
Seven private schools and five monastic schools in Myawaddy District will also be opened simultaneously during this school opening season, and efforts are underway to reopen schools that have been closed for years due to the regional military conflict. - Eleven Media/ANN
