PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol said here on Thursday (May 7) that the kingdom's firm commitment to eradicate online scam operation centres will ensure a safe and trustworthy atmosphere for both investors and tourists.

Chanthol, who is also the first vice-chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, said the enactment of the law on combating online scams last month was a true testament to the government's unwavering commitment to shut down all online scam networks in the country.

"Eradicating online scams is a high priority for the royal government of Cambodia in order to ensure a safe, secure, and trustworthy environment for both investors and tourists," he told an investment forum with some 500 participants.

Chanthol said the government is committed to making Cambodia 100 per cent safe for both investors and tourists.

Cambodia had raided more than 250 online scam centres nationwide from July 2025 to mid-April 2026, said a recent government statement, adding that the South-East Asian country had shut down 91 casinos for operating online scams.

The authorities had carried out procedures to deport a total of 13,039 foreign nationals involved in online scams, including 1,509 women, of 33 different nationalities, the statement said, adding that a total of 241,888 individuals had voluntarily departed Cambodia.

On April 6, the kingdom enacted the law on combatting online scams, which will deliver up to 30 years or life imprisonment to scam bosses. - Xinhua
