Myanmar arrests 43 Chinese nationals fleeing illegal online gambling operations in Northern Shan State


YANGON: Authorities have arrested 43 Chinese nationals who were attempting to flee to China through forest routes after engaging in illegal online gambling activities in northern Shan State, according to reports.

The Myanmar government has been intensifying its crackdown on online scam and gambling operations, treating the effort as a national priority.

In addition to mobilising domestic forces, authorities are also cooperating closely with neighbouring countries to combat such activities.

Joint task forces across various regions and states have been conducting inspections to eliminate illegal online operations and prevent unlawful entry and residence of foreign nationals within the country.

During these ongoing operations, officials received information about the presence of illegal foreign nationals near a river crossing point on the Thanlwin River, close to Wan Mai village in Kali town, Kunhaing Township, southern Shan State.

A joint team comprising security personnel, administrative officials and relevant authorities carried out a search operation.

At approximately 2:00 am. on May 1, the team discovered and detained 43 Chinese male nationals who had been residing illegally in Myanmar.

According to the initial statements of the arrested individuals, they were caught while fleeing through the forest to return to China after being pursued and arrested by security forces while engaging in illegal online gambling in Tantyang Township, Shan State (North).

The Myanmar government is cooperating in the fight against online fraud and online gambling. In addition, foreign nationals who have entered Myanmar for various reasons and are involved in online fraud and gambling are being investigated and transferred to their respective countries in accordance with the law. - Eleven Media/ANN
