LUCENA CITY, (Philippines): A passenger died after reportedly falling overboard from a vessel in the waters off the Verde Island Passage in Batangas City on Friday (May 1), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

The PCG Batangas station said its Isla Verde substation received a report that the man had fallen into the sea and was later found floating unconscious. The vessel’s crew immediately conducted a rescue and retrieved the victim.

Coast Guard personnel and a medical team responded, administered first aid, and brought the still-unidentified passenger to Batangas Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Initial findings showed the victim had been leaning against the vessel’s railing before falling from the upper deck, with no prior concerns reported, the PCG said.

The PCG assisted the victim’s family and coordinated with the shipping company for the transfer of his remains to Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro. Authorities again urged passengers to follow safety protocols at sea. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
