BANGKOK: Thailand has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Malaysia to address security and development challenges in its southern border provinces.
National Security Council secretary general Chatchai Bangchuad said the matter was endorsed in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday (April 23).
The meeting also agreed to several key measures covering security, economic cooperation and law enforcement to advance peace efforts in the region, he said.
"The cooperation with Malaysia remains a key mechanism in addressing the situation in the southern border provinces, particularly in maintaining security and stability and supporting ongoing peace efforts,” he said in a statement released after the meeting.
Thailand, he said, will enhance cooperation with Malaysia in stepping up control measures including efforts to curb the movement of armed groups and weapons, while continuing peace dialogue processes both domestically and at the international level.
The council also approved the appointment of Thanat Suwannanon, director of the National Intelligence Agency, as the new head of the peace dialogue panel for the southern border provinces, he said. - Bernama
