HYDERABAD, India: Heavy voter turnout was recorded in the high-stakes state assembly election in the Indian state of West Bengal on Thursday (April 23).
The polling percentage was the highest seen in India's post-independence history in the two states, according to the Election Commission.
West Bengal's voter turnout exceeded 91.7 per cent.
About 36 million voters were eligible to cast their votes in the polling held for 152 of West Bengal's 294 assembly seats in the first phase.
The state will vote in the second phase on April 29 for the remaining seats.
The counting of votes will be done on May 4. - Bernama
