Calapan City in Philippines hits 42°C ‘danger’ heat index; residents warned

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro: The city’s disaster risk reduction and management office (DRRMO) on Wednesday (April 22) warned residents of dangerous heat levels after the heat index reached 42 degrees Celsius late morning.

In an advisory issued at 11am, the DRRMO said the recorded heat index at the Calapan City Public Market monitoring station fell under the “danger” category, which increases the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Authorities urged the public to take precautionary measures as temperatures continue to soar.

Residents were advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, particularly between 10am and 4pm, and wearing light, breathable clothing. The DRRMO also recommended limiting strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

“The public is being reminded to take precautions with the very hot weather,” the advisory read in Filipino.

The warning comes amid persistent high temperatures affecting several parts of the country, prompting local governments to step up monitoring and public advisories to prevent heat-related health risks.

The DRRMO reminded the public to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to stay safe and cool as extreme heat conditions persist. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
