Man charged after pedestrians hit by car outside Melbourne comic con

MELBOURNE (dpa): A man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after a car mounted the pavement outside a comic convention in the Australian city of Melbourne, killing one and injuring another, police said on Sunday.

Police said the car veered onto the pavement just before 5 pm (0700 GMT) on Saturday, hitting two 20-year-olds who were leaving the Supanova comic convention.

One died at the scene of the accident, while the other was hospitalized with serious lower-body injuries. A third 20-year-old managed to avoid the collision but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The 33-year-old driver had a learner's permit but was not licensed. He continued to drive along the pavement until an off-duty police officer and a passer-by intervened and stopped the vehicle, police said. The reason for the incident remains unclear.

In a post on X, the Supanova organizers expressed their condolences to those affected, saying they were "deeply saddened and distressed by the incident." -- dpa
