Cambodia and Singapore ink partnership to boost foor security and rice trade

SINGAPORE/PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Singapore and Cambodia have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) to strengthen food security and bilateral rice trade between the two countries, said the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE).

In a statement, MSE said the partnership reiterated both countries’ commitment through open trade and avoiding unnecessary trade restrictions.

Under the MOC signed between the Singapore Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, Grace Fu and the Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul, Cambodia will support the sale of rice on mutually agreed terms upon request by the Singapore Government.

According to Fu, food supply resilience is a priority for both Singapore and Cambodia, and geopolitical developments can increase the risk of global food supply disruptions, as evidenced by recent events.

"During such times, strengthening partnerships with like-minded countries becomes more crucial to enhance our shared resilience," she said.

According to MSE, the latest cooperation marks Singapore’s third such agreement, with similar agreements signed with Vietnam and Thailand.

Such agreements are key initiatives under the Global Partnerships pillar of the Singapore Food Story 2 to keep food supply flowing during disruptions.

"Singapore will continue to explore mutually beneficial agreements with like-minded economies to strengthen our food supply resilience," it added. -- BERNAMA
