Sri Lanka repatriates 125 telecom fraud suspects to China

BEIJING: Sri Lankan police have repatriated 125 individuals suspected of involvement in telecom fraud to China, the Ministry of Public Security of China said on Thursday (April 9).

The development comes as part of ongoing efforts to deepen international law enforcement cooperation between China and Sri Lanka and to intensify the crackdown on transnational telecom network fraud.

Since the beginning of 2026, in response to the increasing trend of telecom fraud and related illegal activities shifting to Sri Lanka, Chinese and Sri Lankan police have strengthened their enforcement collaboration and intensified efforts to tackle these crimes.

Recently, Sri Lankan police conducted several raids, dismantling multiple fraud operations and apprehending a number of individuals involved in telecom fraud.

The ministry organised officers from Hubei province to escort these individuals on March 29, with Hubei police currently conducting ongoing investigations on the cases.

According to an official at the ministry, Chinese police will strengthen law enforcement cooperation with more countries, resolutely combat telecom fraud crimes and jointly build a pragmatic and efficient framework to tackle transnational crimes. - China Daily/ANN
