VIENTIANE: As the hot season makes itself felt across Laos, a fresh emerald escape is preparing to open its gates. Located just 8km from the heart of Luang Prabang city, Namdong Park is positioning itself as the province’s newest must-visit destination for those seeking a blend of pristine nature and recreational activities.
Tucked between the quiet villages of Xiengmuak and Zard, the park is a sprawling testament to the region’s biodiversity. The site is defined by its dense green canopy, fresh mountain air, and the soothing sounds of a waterfall that serves as the park’s centrepiece.

Restoration of the Namdong spirit
The creation of the park is rooted in a commitment to environmental restoration. The developer, Bounthieng Duangpaseuth, has focused on rehabilitating the site’s natural state to a time before the Namdong hydropower project existed. In a move to prioritise ecology over industrial output, the hydropower plant—which produced minimal electricity—was purchased and shut down.
By releasing water from the dam back into its original streamway, the developers have successfully revived the natural flow that now defines the current Namdong Park.
A gateway to the great outdoors
The official opening of Namdong Park is perfectly timed for the Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) festivities in April. While Luang Prabang is famous for its temples and night market, this new development offers a different kind of attraction—one focused on ecological preservation and immersion in nature.
The park’s design encourages low-impact tourism, allowing visitors to explore their environment without sacrificing comfort. Whether it is the mist rising from the falls or the scent of damp earth and wild flora, the site offers a sensory experience that is increasingly rare in more developed tourist locations.
Adventure Above and Below the Canopy
For those who prefer a more active retreat, Namdong Park has integrated several high-energy activities into the natural landscape. A series of hiking trails wind through the forest, catering to different fitness levels and offering viewpoints that overlook the cascading water. These paths allow visitors to witness the local birdlife and unique plant species native to the Xiengmuak area.
