VIENTIANE: Traditional Lao melodies are set to be transformed through fresh interpretations, following the launch of the “A Symphony of Heritage” initiative by the musical group “The Pianist Vientiane”.
The initiative brings together young Lao musicians, cultural institutions and international partners to preserve and reinterpret some of the country’s most treasured songs while introducing them to modern audiences.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Vientiane Administration Committee, Vilayvone Chanthalaty, thanked The Pianist Vientiane for its role in promoting orchestral music in Laos and showcasing Lao cultural identity on national and international stages.
She noted that the ensemble has gained recognition for performing at state events, receptions for foreign visitors, and cultural exchange activities in other countries.
Vilayvone also expressed gratitude to the Swiss government for its continued support for Laos’ development, particularly in the cultural sphere.
Regional Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office for the Mekong Region, Jean-Gabriel Duss, said Switzerland is proud to support the project, which highlights the creativity and dedication of young Lao musicians.
The “A Symphony of Heritage” project will involve documenting and rearranging 10 iconic traditional Lao songs into orchestral compositions.
Standardised musical scores and recordings will also be produced, helping preserve these cultural treasures for future generations.
The project is expected to provide valuable learning resources for students and musicians across the country, enabling them to perform and adapt these works while keeping traditional melodies alive.
Public concerts planned in Vientiane and several provinces will showcase the newly arranged repertoire, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the beauty of Lao musical heritage presented in a contemporary orchestral style.
The initiative is being implemented in cooperation with the Lao National College of Arts, which provides artistic and technical expertise, while private sector partners contribute financial and logistical support.
Traditional musicians and composers are also closely involved to ensure the authenticity of the music.
Now in its sixth year, The Pianist Vientiane continues to promote orchestral music in Laos under the concept of “developing while preserving Lao identity”, blending traditional instruments with international orchestral performance.
This year’s activities include a seminar, music outreach programmes in several provinces, and a charity concert featuring the newly arranged songs. Proceeds from the concert will help renovate the piano rehearsal room and purchase musical equipment for the National College of Arts.
A renowned violinist from Switzerland will take part in the concert and conduct a violin master class for Lao musicians and students. - Vientiane Times/ANN
