Cambodia launches project to combat fake news


PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's Ministry of Information on Thursday launched a project of "Zero Fake News" campaign with support from the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund.

Speaking at the launching ceremony in Phnom Penh, Information Minister Neth Pheaktra said stakeholders from Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar and China would be invited to participate in this campaign, aiming at eliminating fake news in Cambodia and other LMC countries.

The minister said that eliminating fake news was crucial to contribute to maintaining peace, political stability, security and social order.

"The media is playing a more important role than ever in providing accurate information to the public and should be used as a bridge between people in the region and in the world for common peace and shared prosperity," Pheaktra said.

He added that the campaign was expected to raise awareness among people in Cambodia and in the region about the danger and impact of fake news, encouraging them to join in preventing fake news both inside their countries and across the border.

The LMC countries include China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Initiated by China in March 2016, the LMC Special Fund aimed at supporting small- and medium-sized cooperation projects put forward by the six LMC countries. - Xinhua
