YANGON: Starting March 7, private vehicles will be allowed to purchase fuel under an odd–even licence plate system, according to ward administration officials.

A ward administration official in Thaketa Township said that beginning March 7, fuel sales for private vehicles will be carried out on a rotating system based on odd and even numbers.

Under the system, vehicles with even-numbered license plates will be allowed to purchase fuel on even-numbered dates.

Vehicles with odd-numbered license plates will be permitted to buy fuel on odd-numbered dates.

A driver in Yangon said that the number of vehicles queuing at fuel stations on the morning of March 6 was lower compared with previous days. However, fuel stations are currently limiting sales to 50,000 kyats (US$23.81) worth of fuel per vehicle.

Another ward administration official said that sidecar motorcycles operating in suburban neighbourhoods must wear designated public security jackets when lining up at fuel stations. Authorities warned that those repeatedly queuing without necessity will face action.

In addition, the information team announced that both fuel business operators and the public are strictly prohibited from hoarding fuel or reselling it at higher prices.

The regulations will remain in effect until further notice. Anyone found violating the rules will be prosecuted in accordance with existing laws, the statement added. - Eleven Media/ANN
