Donations flow in for orphans in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), through the Department of Community Development (JAPEM), in collaboration with the Brunei-Muara District Office, Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) held the National Orphans’ Donation Presentation Ceremony yesterday at Dar-Al Intisar Hall of the Jerudong Sports Complex.

Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Ahmaddin Abdul Rahman, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of BIBD, and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Nazmi Mohamad, the co-guests of honour, presented the donations.

The ceremony proceeded with the presentation of the Excellent Students Incentive Award Scheme, sponsored by BIBD.

This year, 12 orphaned students who achieved outstanding results in ‘O’ Levels, Brunei Religious Higher Certificate (STPUB), Brunei Religious Education Certificate (SPUB) and Primary School Examination (PSR) in 2025 were honoured. The awards were presented by Dato Seri Setia Awang Ahmaddin.

Sharifah Habibah Mohammad Shariff, Melvin Tan Liang Kwang and Nurhana Aqilah Saiful Bahrin were the recipients under Excellent Students for ‘O’ Level while the recipients for STPUB were Muhammad Norafie Muhammad Roslan, Siti Nurbasyirah Huzaimi and Muhammad Irfan Abd Rahman.

Recipients for SPUB were Siti Nurnnajihah Yahmiruddin Shah, Nur Nabilah Syauqina Sapree and Hamimi Nurfaqihah Zahirhi Abdul Kifli.

For PSR, the recipients were Maizatul Mazeedah binti Abdul Rahim, Nursarah Ferhanah Zainal and Nur Zahirah Bazilah Mahmood.

The ceremony continued with the distribution of donation envelopes to 3,061 orphans registered under JAPEM. The recipients comprised 1,998 orphans from Brunei-Muara District, 479 from Tutong District, 446 from Belait District and 138 from Temburong District.

The donations were contributions from the JAPEM Orphans’ Fund, the Brunei-Muara District Orphans’ Fund, and BIBD. This year, the total amount donated through the JAPEM Orphans’ Fund was BND306,100.00, while the Brunei-Muara District Orphans’ Fund contributed BND61,200, and BIBD donated BND153,050.

The Secretariat of the Orphans’ Fund welcomes public donations. Contributions can be channelled through the Management and Administration Division, Department of Community Development, Level 2, Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports building during office hours; or through the Brunei Prihatin SMS platform from Feb12 to Nov 12, by typing YATIM followed by the amount (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 50 or 100) to 38111 for DST and Progresif subscribers, or 39999 for Imagine subscribers.
