MANILA: Minor strombolian activity was recorded at the Mayon Volcano in Bicol early Sunday (Feb 15) morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
A strombolian activity is characterised by intermittent, firework-like eruptions of magma with moderate gas content, according to the United States National Park Service.
Phivolcs said the event at the Mayon summit crater began at 5.20am and ended at 5.28am, lasting eight minutes.
This marks the 41st consecutive day of effusive eruption at the Mayon Volcano.
State volcanologists said effusive eruptions occur when incandescent lava steadily flows out of the volcano, generating pyroclastic density currents (uson) and rockfall.
Alert Level 3 prevails over Mayon, indicating intensified unrest.
Entry into the six-kilometre Permanent Danger Zone remains prohibited. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
