BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Remain steadfast and committed in fulfilling duties and responsibilities, urged Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Datuk Paduka Seri Setia Awang Salim Besar.
He reminded Syariah Courts personnel during the Annual Assembly of Syariah Court Officers for 1447 Hijrah at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Brunei High Court Building and the Syariah Courts in Jalan Stoney on Thursday (Feb 5).
Touching on the Sulh process, he noted that “based on statistics for Sulh cases throughout 2025, only 36 out of 106 cases registered at the Sulh Unit were successfully resolved, representing just 34 per cent, rather than 50 per cent. This figure may be due to a lack of public understanding of the Sulh process”.
He emphasised that the Sulh process is extremely beneficial and offers significant advantages to the parties involved in a case, and that “the Sulh process should therefore be explained to the public so that society can better understand its benefits and the reasons why Sulh should be conducted and implemented within the Syariah Courts”.
Organised by the Syariah Courts under the State Judiciary Department of the Prime Minister’s Office, the event commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and a prayer led by Assistant Registrar of the Syariah Subordinate Court Mohammad Faidzal Wahab.
It also saw an address by the Acting Chief Registrar of the Syariah Court of Appeal Pengiran Mohammaddin Pengiran Aliakbar, in his capacity as Adviser to the Annual Assembly of Syariah Court Officers for 2026.
A special video tribute was also screened in remembrance of former Syariah judiciary figures who have passed away, as a mark of respect from the court community.
It concluded with the presentation of appreciation awards to retiring staff, in recognition of their dedication, service and contributions throughout their tenure with the Syariah Courts. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
