JAKARTA (Bernama) -- Indonesia has advised its citizens to postpone travel to Iran amid widespread unrest, while authorities are closely monitoring the evolving security situation.

In a statement on Monday, the Foreign Ministry urged Indonesians currently in Iran to remain vigilant, follow developments through official information channels, avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place, and maintain close communication with the embassy.

"Based on the embassy’s assessment and the conditions on the ground as of January 12, an evacuation is not currently deemed necessary. However, the embassy is making the necessary preparations for a possible evacuation should the situation escalate,” the ministry stated.

The ministry said it had been in contact with the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran and Indonesian nationals across various regions in Iran to monitor developments in the Middle Eastern country.

It noted that major cities with significant Indonesian communities, such as Qom and Isfahan, had remained relatively free from significant disturbances.

Protests erupted on December 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar over the sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial and worsening economic conditions, later spreading to several other cities.

Anadolu, citing the US-based rights group HRANA, reported 490 protesters and 48 security personnel killed, with more than 10,600 people arrested, although no official casualty figures are available. - Bernama
