NEW DELHI: (Bernama) Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus said the election to elect a new parliament will be held on schedule on Feb 12, 2026 despite "millions of dollars" being spent by "supporters of the ousted regime" to disrupt the electoral process.

"The nation is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights which were stolen by the autocratic regime," Yunus said, in reference to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's administration.

Yunus made the remarks on Monday (Dec 22) evening in a phone conversation with Sergio Gor, who is United States (US) Ambassador to India and serves as US President Donald Trump's special envoy to South and Central Asia.

Yunus accused Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024, of "inciting violence," according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency report.

Bangladesh has been shaken by the assassination this month of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a popular figure in the anti-Hasina uprising.

The assassination and US-Bangladesh relations were also discussed during the phone conversation.

The US State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in a post on X said Gor "held a productive call with Chief Advisor Yunus to discuss recent events in Bangladesh and shared US interests to advance prosperity through trade." - Bernama
