VIENTIANE/HANOI (Laotian Times): Laos and Vietnam have agreed to establish a Lao-Vietnam University in Laos and expand a programme sending students from border areas to study in Vietnamese schools, strengthening educational cooperation.

The deal came to fruition last week, when Lao Minister of Education and Sports Thongsalith Mangnomek met Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during an official visit to Vietnam. During the meeting, they agreed to fast-track preparations for the university and coordinate the recruitment of students.

The officials also outlined plans to enhance education, with a focus on language learning, including offering Vietnamese as an optional foreign language in Lao schools and continuing academic exchanges.

Thirteen schools in Laos already teach Vietnamese, and both countries are expanding teacher training programs.

They pledged to deepen cooperation in human resource development, particularly in science, technology, and sports, in line with Laos’ national development strategy through 2035. -- Laotian Times
