VIENTIANE: The first National Media Congress was held in Lao capital Vientiane, adopting a roadmap to advance the modernisation of the country's media sector to improve its quality and effectiveness.
The meeting, held from Monday (July 13) to Wednesday (July 15) under the theme "Strengthening Party Leadership and Developing the Media Toward a New Level of Quality," brought together senior leaders, media executives, editors, journalists, and communication professionals from across the country to discuss the future direction of the nation's media industry.
During the closing session, Khamphan Pheuyavong, head of the Commission for Information and Education of Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee, presented a summary report.
He noted that the event achieved its objectives by reviewing past achievements, identifying key challenges, and setting future directions and measures to improve the quality and effectiveness of media work, Lao Economic Daily reported on Thursday.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his appreciation to the participants and reaffirmed his confidence in media professionals across the country.
He outlined five priorities for strengthening the country's media sector.
First, he called for greater unity and cooperation among Lao media organisations through mutual learning, a better understanding of the evolving information landscape, and the ability to distinguish constructive criticism from unethical attacks.
Second, he urged media professionals to preserve Lao cultural values by upholding humility, generosity, and respect while rejecting vulgarity, dishonesty, and selfishness in their work.
Third, he stressed the importance of defending truth and justice through responsible reporting, resisting misinformation, and maintaining public trust.
Fourth, he called on Party and state agencies to provide stronger guidance, support, and constructive assistance to media organisations.
Finally, he encouraged media professionals to pursue continuous professional development by improving their skills, embracing innovation, and adapting to changing circumstances to enhance the quality of journalism. - Xinhua
