Eight killed and four injured in brake failure crash in central Philippines


MANILA (Xinhua): Eight people were killed while four others were injured after a vehicle lost its brakes, rolled off the road, and plunged into a rocky vacant lot in Negros Oriental province in the central Philippines, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the crash occurred on Saturday morning as the vehicle was traveling down a downhill slope on its way to a cemetery in Ayungon municipality.

The passengers, all relatives, were reportedly heading to a death anniversary service.

The fatalities included one male and seven females aged between 42 and 71, police said.

Four other passengers were injured in the crash, including two minors. They were rushed to a local hospital and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Police said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. -- Xinhua
