Two Indonesian runners die while on Mount Lawu extreme trail run

JAKARTA: Two runners collapsed and died of suspected heart attacks while taking part in the 2025 Siksorogo Lawu Ultra trail race on Mount Lawu in Karanganyar regency, Central Java, on Sunday (Dec 7).

Karanganyar Police spokesperson First Insp Mulyadi said the victims, identified as Sigit Joko Purnomo, 45, and Pujo Buntoro, 55, collapsed within minutes of each other at around 11am.

“Both runners had underlying medical conditions, one had respiratory problems and the other a heart condition,” Mulyadi said on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.id.

According to Mulyadi, Sigit collapsed at around 10:44am on Mitis Hill, near the 12-kilometre mark of the 15-km course.

Eleven minutes later, Pujo fell on Cemoro Wayang Hill, around the 8-km mark. Both incidents occurred amid heavy rain in the area.

“Medical teams and race marshals were immediately deployed to provide first aid, but both victims were believed to have died by the time help arrived,” Mulyadi said. - The Jakarta Post/ANN
