MANILA (Bernama-PNA): The Philippines is prepared to support a political process in Myanmar that is both "Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned,” the Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported, citing its Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday.

The department issued the statement ahead of Myanmar’s junta-led elections scheduled from late December 2025 to January 2026, the first since the military seized power in February 2021.

"Bearing in mind the continuous developments in and out of Myanmar, the Special Envoy will also remain ready and open to other means in which the Special Envoy can contribute to a political process that is ultimately Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned,” DFA Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asean Affairs Dominic Xavier Imperial said.

DFA Secretary Ma. Theres P. Lazaro was designated by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as special envoy to facilitate a peaceful solution to the Myanmar crisis, as the Philippines assumes chairmanship of Asean in 2026.

Imperial said Lazaro will build on the gains made by the Malaysian Special Envoy and focus on facilitating constructive dialogue and humanitarian assistance in Myanmar.

"The Special Envoy looks forward to grounding its work within the Five-Point Consensus, towards deliberate, pragmatic, and sustainable actions in the process,” he said.
