Cambodian authorities seize Illegal timber in Kratie, following social media criticism

PHNOM PENH: Var Thorn, governor of Kratie province, announced on Oct 29, that authorities halted the illegal transportation of 13 large pieces of timber, equivalent to 8.725 cubic metres, "in a timely manner" after Nature Lovers Youth Association head Tan Kimsour reported on the matter. His comments were echoed by other social media users and influencers.

In a social media post, Kimsour warned that he believed that the forestry administration and environment officers in Kratie province continue to allow forest crimes. He said that he would expose the corrupt officials in the future.

His post was shared by the Ministry of Environment.

Governor Thorn described the haul of illegal timber.

“This timber is off-grade wood that could be used for construction work such as formwork,” he said.

“It was transported from Ou Krieng Sen Chey district heading to Kratie province. The criminals dumped the wood in Koulab commune, Chitr Borei district before the authorities arrived, and fled,” he added.

He explained that the authorities are searching for the criminals responsible. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
