BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) has reported two sentencing cases under the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, involving foreign nationals who overstayed their passes in Brunei Darussalam.
In the first case, Yunus Harianto Sutarno, a 48-year-old Malaysian, faced charges transferred from the Royal Customs and Excise Department.
He pleaded guilty to three offences: overstaying in Brunei after the expiry of his immigration pass under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, and two offences under Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Order, 2006, for possessing prohibited items, including cigarettes, vape products, and alcoholic beverages.
He was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for the immigration offence, a fine of BND36,105 or 14 months’ imprisonment for the first excise offence, and a fine of BND21,750 or 13 months’ imprisonment for the second excise offence.
The total sentence amounted to seven months’ imprisonment, three strokes of the cane, and fines totaling BND57,855 or a combined 27 months’ imprisonment. The sentence took effect on Oct 18.
In the second case, Eni Rohyati, a 47-year-old Indonesian, pleaded guilty to overstaying under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act.
She was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment and a BND800 fine.
After failing to pay the fine, one month was added to her prison term, bringing her total sentence to five months’ imprisonment, effective Oct 21. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
