BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Xinhua): The Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) announced plans to issue a new family of banknotes in five denominations -- Brunei dollar(BND)1, BND5, BND10, BND100, and BND500 -- marking a significant milestone in the nation's currency development.

According to the BDCB on Monday, the new series is scheduled to enter circulation in the first half of 2026.

The new series will feature upgraded security features, in line with global advancements in the currency industry. These enhancements safeguard the security and integrity of Brunei's currency while strengthening protection against counterfeiting.

It reflects BDCB's dedication to keeping Brunei's currency safe, especially as cash continues to play a vital role and is still widely used in everyday life, even as Brunei advances towards a digital economy.

The central bank said that the new series reaffirms Brunei's official unit of currency according to the Currency Order, 2004, that is, the "dollar." The term "Ringgit" has been replaced with "Brunei Dollars" across all denominations.

The BDCB reassures the public that all existing banknotes in circulation will remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the new family banknotes series. - Xinhua
