Foreign tourist arrivals in Laos up by 15 percent in first eight months

Luang Prabang is Laos’ most popular destination among foreign tourists.

VIENTIANE: Tourism in Laos continues to boom, with a significant 15 percent increase in the number of foreign visitors in the first eight months of this year.

According to the Tourism Marketing Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 3,061,928 foreign tourists visited Laos from January to August, reflecting growing global interest in Laos as a travel destination.

Among the top contributors to this surge were Thailand, Vietnam and China, which led the list of countries providing the highest number of tourists.

Statistics compiled by the Tourism Marketing Department showed that 977,675 Thai nationals visited Laos, 790,403 from Vietnam, 750,650 from China, 127,379 from the Republic of Korea, and 49,934 from the USA.

The strong showing from neighbouring Thailand is consistent with historical travel trends, given the shared cultural ties and geographic proximity.

Meanwhile, increasing interest from Vietnam and China highlights the effectiveness of stronger advertising and improved road, rail and air links.

The provinces that attracted the highest number of tourists were Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Champasak, as well as the capital Vientiane, thanks to easier travel via the Laos-China Railway, the Vientiane-Vangvieng Expressway, and the upgraded Road 13 South.

Tourism officials attribute the growth to several factors, including relaxed entry regulations, improved infrastructure, and marketing campaigns targeting regional and international travellers.

The government’s efforts to promote eco-tourism, Laos’ many cultural attractions, and adventure tourism have also contributed to the country’s appeal.

Known for its scenic landscapes, ancient temples, and rich cultural traditions, Laos continues to gain popularity among travellers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences in Southeast Asia.

As the peak season approaches, tourism authorities are optimistic that the upward trend will continue, further boosting the economy and supporting local businesses.

Tourism Marketing Department officials say they will continue to improve tourist experiences, invest in sustainable tourism initiatives, and work closely with neighbouring countries to maintain the momentum.

With nearly 3.1 million tourists having visited Laos by the end of August, the country is on track to exceed its visitor target for 2025. - Vientiane Times/ANN
