BEIJING (SCMP): A nurse in Thailand who stopped to help at the scene of a car accident on her way home from work was devastated to discover that the victim was her own boyfriend.
The incident occurred at around midnight on September 6, on Highway 347 in Ayutthaya province, central Thailand.
It has sparked a wave of sympathy online.
A white Mitsubishi SUV is believed to have veered out of control and smashed into an electricity pole on the central divider.
The impact caused severe damage, leaving the entire right side of the vehicle destroyed. The 42-year-old driver was left trapped inside the mangled wreckage.
Rescue teams from Ayutthaya swiftly arrived at the scene and immediately used hydraulic cutting tools to pry open the vehicle and remove the trapped driver.
At this moment, an off-duty accident and emergency nurse, who had just finished her shift at Ayutthaya Hospital, happened to be passing by.
She pulled over without hesitation and rushed to help with the rescue.
As she drew closer and saw the driver’s face, she suddenly burst into tears, realising that the critically injured man was her own boyfriend.
It was later revealed that the couple had just finished work and left the hospital together. She had been driving behind him on their way home.
Eyewitnesses said that despite being overwhelmed by grief, the nurse continued performing CPR on her boyfriend. Her efforts even persisted as he was rushed to the hospital.
Despite doing everything she could, her boyfriend succumbed to his injuries.
The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
The tragic circumstances of the crash, reported by the Thai daily newspaper Khaosod, have sparked widespread mourning and heartfelt messages have been posted across social media.
One person said: “It is hard to imagine how heartbreaking it must have been. My heart aches for you. May his love continue to guide and comfort you. Wishing you peace.”
Another said: “The psychological trauma must be immense. I hope you do not develop PTSD. I also found my husband after a roadside accident. I had to stay calm and handle everything step by step. Now, just riding a scooter fills me with anxiety.”
“Your kindness gave you the chance to personally accompany your boyfriend on his final journey. He was still able to see you before leaving this world,” said a third. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
