BANGKOK: A Thai man performed CPR on an electrocuted cat, successfully resuscitating it and garnering widespread applause online.
A 27-second video clip posted by the man, known by the handle @bingbing2070, on Aug 3, attracted 224,000 likes and 2,400 comments.
In the video, Bingbing administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to a cat that was electrocuted while climbing a utility pole.
With one hand, Bingbing steadies the cat’s neck to keep it in position, while his other hand presses against the side of its body. The cat regains consciousness in a matter of moments.
It was later revealed that Bingbing is a veterinary assistant at the Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Bangkok.
According to the hospital’s page, it not only offers treatment but also engages in academic research on veterinary science.
The 27-year-old veterinary assistant explained that he was notified of the incident by his daughter, who happened to be nearby at the time.
Upon arrival, he saw that another person was attempting to perform CPR but was pressing on the wrong area.
“The correct method for chest compressions is to apply pressure to the side of the cat’s body,” he shared with Thai news outlet Bright TV.
After the feline regained consciousness, it struggled with its breathing. He promptly rushed the cat to a veterinary hospital for further assistance.
A person identified as the cat’s owner, going by the name @yingrak, mentioned that the cat, named Thongkham, was comforted by a senior tabby that licked his head during his stay in the ICU.
On August 7, Bingbing posted another video of Thongkham, showing that he had made a remarkable recovery and was able to walk.
Bingbing’s actions have been widely praised by online observers. Some users also emphasised the importance of a safe living environment for pets.
“Thank you, doctor, for saving little Thongkham’s life. I have a cat at home and now know how to perform CPR on him,” one remarked.
“Wishing a speedy recovery. There are only eight lives left, my child,” noted another, referencing the belief that cats have nine lives.
A third comment read: “Keeping cats in a fully enclosed environment will help ensure their safety.”
In response, Thongkham’s owner acknowledged that they had secured all doors and windows, but spirited Thongkham had managed to slip through a gap in the window. The owner vowed to seal the opening, install a playpen, and address any other potential escape routes.
The owner also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Bingbing for saving Thongkham. - South China Morning Post
