YANGON: Security forces have reportedly discovered homemade landmines planted on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway and under a small bridge between Mopalin and Mayanchaung villages in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, according to sources.
At around 7:30 am on June 24, security forces discovered two homemade landmines planted on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway near Angapo Village in Kyaikto Township.
Similarly, at around 12:30 pm, security forces discovered seven homemade landmines planted in a five-gallon container under bridge (3/95) at milepost (94/7) on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway, a source close to the security forces said.
He continued, “In addition, at around 4 pm, two more homemade mines were found near Milepost (94/3) of the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway. The mines were discovered by security forces during a clearance operation along the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway between Mopalin Village and Mayanchaung Village.”
He added that the homemade mines discovered by security forces were defused and cleared by relevant forces.
Bridges on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway in Kyaikto, Bilin and Thaton townships of Mon State have been frequently detonated, and roadside mines have also caused injuries to travellers and damage to vehicles.
On June 13, a landmine exploded on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway near Daung Taung Village in Kyaikto Township, damaging a vehicle and injuring two men and two women who were in the vehicle, according to locals.
In addition, on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway line, railway crossings are frequently destroyed by mines, and freight and passenger trains are also frequently attacked by mines. - Eleven Media
