PHNOM PENH (Bernama) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his condolences to the governments of Thailand and Myanmar following earthquakes that struck both countries Friday (March 28).

On his Facebook, the premier expressed his concern for those affected by the natural disaster and advised Cambodians working in the two counties to take safety precautions.

"Firstly, I would like to express my condolences to the Government of Thailand and the Government of the Union Republic of Myanmar, and to the citizens who were affected by the natural disaster of the earthquake in Thailand and Myanmar on Friday afternoon,” said Manet.

The powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck the two Southeast Asian nations on Friday afternoon, devastating buildings, infrastructure and residential properties.

"The well-being of Khmer citizens who live and work in Myanmar and Thailand, especially in the areas affected by the earthquake is a priority of the Cambodian government.

The Cambodian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand are cooperating with the local authorities to provide assistance to workers facing difficulties, he said.

In Myanmar, the State Administration Council Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing announced a state of emergency after the disaster.

"I have declared a state of emergency in all affected areas and have opened all possible channels to receive international assistance.

"I would like to invite any country or organisation to come and assist the monks, nuns, and citizens in Myanmar who are in need,” he said in an address to the nation Friday. - Bernama
