Turmoil in southern Thailand - Two bomb explosions in Pattani injure nine police officers

PATTANI (Bernama): Two bomb explosions in Maelan district, Pattani province, southern Thailand, left nine police officers injured early Friday (March 14) morning.

Maelan District Police Chief, Col. Pol. Panya Utapao, said the incident occurred at around 8:50 am local time while police officers were conducting security patrols in Kampung Pelakprue, Muang Tia subdistrict.

"At the time, the police team was patrolling on three motorcycles and a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Suddenly, an explosion occurred, injuring nine officers on duty," he told reporters here on Friday.

He added that about 20 minutes later, another bomb explosion took place by the roadside nearby.

"Initial investigations found that both bombs were attached to electric poles by the roadside," he said.

Panya confirmed that all injured police officers had been taken to Maelan Hospital for treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.

According to him, the police are actively investigating to identify those responsible for the incident.

Earlier, on March 8, several bomb explosions and shootings in Narathiwat and Pattani provinces claimed five lives and injured 13 others. --  Bernama
