Myanmar experiences over 1,000 natural disasters in nine months


YANGON: Myanmar experienced 1,237 natural disasters from April to December 2024, according to the Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on Monday (Feb 3).

This is a decrease from the 1,670 natural disasters recorded during the same period in 2023, Daw Lay Shwe Sin Oo, a director from the department told Xinhua.

The disasters included floods, strong winds, and fires, with wind-related disasters being the most common during this period.

In response to the disasters, the department provided over 6.893 billion kyats (approximately US$3.28) in aid. - Xinhua
