Brunei bank raises red flag on ‘online loans’

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: ’Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) alerted the public to financing scams where scammers impersonate BIBD on social media to offer ‘online loans’ and unlicensed financing schemes.

These fraudsters misuse BIBD’s logo, images, and fabricate fake testimonials to gain trust and deceive victims into sharing personal or banking information.

Such scams exploit individuals by presenting fraudulent financial offers promising quick approvals and minimal requirements.

Falling victim to these schemes can result in significant financial losses, unauthorised access to bank accounts and misuse of sensitive information for criminal purposes.

BIBD underscores the importance of staying vigilant and verifying the legitimacy of any accounts or communications claiming to be from BIBD.

Engaging with unlicensed financial services poses serious risks, as these operations fall outside regulatory protections, leaving individuals vulnerable to exploitation and fraud.

Fraudulent offers made through social media, particularly from unauthorised accounts, are designed to mislead individuals into sharing sensitive information or making payments under false pretences.

Customers are strongly advised to deal only with verified institutions and official channels to protect their finances and personal data.

BIBD advised the public to only obtain financing facilities from financial institutions licensed by the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank; avoid offers of ‘online loans’ or financing schemes made through social media or other unofficial platforms; verify that any communications or offers claiming to be from BIBD come from BIBD’s official social media accounts, which are marked with the verified blue tick; and immediately report any unlicensed financing schemes or suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
