SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): A man carrying gemstone rings and a woman found with gold jewellery were among the 41 cases caught during a five-day joint operation by the Singapore Customs and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

From Sept 4 to 8, the two authorities detected 36 cases involving duty-unpaid cigarettes and five cases involving goods subject to the goods and services tax (GST) at the Singapore Cruise Centre, said the Singapore Customs on Sept 27.

The total composition sum imposed was $12,105 and the total duty and GST recovered was $743.35, said the authority in a Facebook post.

In the first of three cases highlighted in the video post, a man was found to have brought in gemstone rings for commercial purposes and under-declared the value of the goods.

A second case involved a woman found with gold jewellery that was intended for sale in Singapore. She was a repeat offender.

In the third case, a woman was brought to the Singapore Customs’ attention for under-declaring the value of the clothes she was couriering into Singapore for commercial purposes.

All goods imported into Singapore are subject to GST or duty payment. Travellers will be penalised if they flout the requirements, said the Singapore Customs. - The Straits Times/ANN
