Five injured as mob attacks foreign students at India's Gujarat University

NEW DELHI (Bernama): A mob attacked international students in their hostel at India's Gujarat University in Ahmedabad city on Saturday night for offering tarawih prayers (special prayers performed by Muslims during Ramadan).

"Some 20-25 people entered the hostel premises and objected to the international students offering namaz (Islamic prayers) there," Ahmedabad police commissioner Gyanendra Singh Malik was quoted as saying in a news report on Sunday.

The mob also vandalised hostel rooms, shouted slogans and hurled stones.

Five students were injured in the attack, according to local media reports.

"They attacked us inside the rooms too. They broke laptops, phones and damaged bikes," an Afghan student said.

One student from Tajikistan and another from Sri Lanka were admitted to hospital.

Gujarat University has around 300 foreign students from various countries, including Africa and Central Asia. - Bernama
