BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A delegation from Brunei Darussalam attended the second Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) Defence Ministers Council meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabiover the weekend.
Representing Brunei Darussalam and on behalf of kingdom's king Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi Mohd Yussof.
The IMCTC is an initiative established by Saudi Arabia in 2015, with its first meeting held in 2017 in Riyadh.
IMCTC aims to discuss and further enhance efforts in combating the threat of terrorism and violent extremism at the international level.
The second meeting was attended by 42 member states and three observer countries. The meeting discussed strategies and key achievements of IMCTC, as well as initiatives set-forth by IMCTC’s member states on countering terrorism.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi met with Saudi Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs Dr Khaled bin Hussein Al-Biyari.
The two sides discussed issues pertaining to regional and global terrorism challenges, as well as expressed strong commitment towards further strengthening and enhancing bilateral defence and military cooperation between the two countries.
The member countries of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) have collectively agreed to take the lead in various initiatives, encompassing funding, training, expertise and skills.
The statement mentioned that the meeting, attended by 42 member countries, discussed initiatives to be led by member countries in addressing international threats of extremism and violence across four key domains: restricting the spread of ideology, communication, blocking terrorist financing and enhancing military cooperation. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
