PHNOM PENH, Oct 3 (Xinhua): Cambodia has so far administered at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccines to some 15.19 million people, or 94.9 per cent of its 16-million population, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Monday.

Addressing a graduation ceremony of students at the Vanda Institute here, the Cambodian prime minister said the government's tough measures, together with high vaccination rates, have enabled the South-East Asian nation to control the pandemic successfully, protecting millions of lives.

Cambodia has seen no new deaths from Covid-19 since April, as 90.9 per cent of its population had been fully vaccinated with two required vaccine doses, the health ministry said on Monday.

Also, about 63.6 per cent of the people had received a third dose, 27 percent had had a fourth jab, and 5.4 percent had taken a fifth shot, the ministry added.

China's Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines have been widely used in the kingdom's immunization program.

Thong Mengdavid, a research fellow at the Phnom Penh-based Asian Vision Institute, said Chinese Covid-19 vaccines have not only helped protect the lives of Cambodian people but also boosted economic growth.

"China was the first country to help Cambodia in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic," he told Xinhua. "And from the very beginning, Cambodia's choice of China as the strategic vaccine supplier was absolutely right."

With China's vaccines, Cambodia could accomplish the nationwide vaccination program, achieving strong herd immunity, he said.
