BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct 10 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei on Sunday recorded a new daily high in Covid-19 cases since the pandemic first struck in the country, with 381 new cases added in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 8,980.
Meanwhile, another Covid-19 positive patient, a man aged 40 also died today, and the cause death is still under investigation, according to the Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Md Isham Jaafar at a press conference in the capital on Sunday.
In the daily Covid-19 situation update, the health minister said there are 195 additional new cases to 25 of the existing active clusters who are close contacts with several positive cases.
Five new clusters have been detected, with 60 cases. All of the new clusters are accommodation clusters where one of it, namely Destiny Jaya Sdn Bhd Cluster is a worker dormitory.
One cluster has been closed following no new detected cases in the cluster for 28 days. The closed cluster is 2839 Cluster. Therefore, the current total active clusters are 160 clusters.
Meanwhile, 126 new cases are still being investigated to determine the source of the infection.
322 cases have recovered today, bringing the total number of recovered cases in Brunei Darussalam to 6,690 cases, whereas the total number active cases are 2,226 cases.
Among the cases being treated at the National Isolation Centre, eight cases are in Category 5 and currently treated at the Intensive Care Unit.
All of them require assistance of artificial ventilation with three cases requiring the help of additional heart/lung machine (ECMO). Meanwhile, 30 cases are categorised in Category 4 that require oxygen assistance and are under close monitoring.
In another development, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew said he was unhappy with the behaviour of irresponsible people who are not following the Covid-19 measures.
“It is discouraging to note that in the few nights since the enforcement of Operasi Pulih, over 100 people have been fined for flouting the movement restriction measures.
“This figure reflects only the people who got caught. The actual number of violators might be far higher,” the minister said while acknowledging the increasing number of movement control violations recorded since the start of the operation on Oct 4.
With regards to whether a stiffer fine will be introduced as a deterrent, he said, “That is a possibility. Else, the government will find other ways to discourage rule breakers. It is still being discussed”.
