Brunei enters northeast monsoon season, warns of flood risk as strong El Niño persists

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN  (Xinhua): Brunei on Monday entered the northeast monsoon season, which is expected to last until around the end of March 2027.

According to a press release issued by the Brunei Meteorological Department on Monday, the first three months of the northeast monsoon -- November and December 2026 and January 2027 -- are typically the wettest months of the year, recording the highest rainfall amounts and number of rainy days.

The department urged the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season due to the increased risk of flooding and flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as locations near riverbanks.

Meanwhile, based on forecast models from international climate centers, the El Niño phenomenon has been present in the Pacific Ocean since June 2026 and has now reached a very strong intensity.

The department said the very strong El Niño event is expected to persist until around March 2027, with a probability of more than 83 percent.  -- Xinhua
