Bringing focus on Brunei-Malaysia relations

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): Fifty-four papers on a number of topics were presented during the fourth Brunei-Malaysia forum which ends Wednesday (Sept 15).

The two-day forum was hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and saw 16 panels discuss topics such as ‘The Malay World’, ‘Youth and Social Issues’, ‘Islam, Media and Tourism’, ‘Environments and Transformation’ and ‘Pandemic’.

The theme of the forum was ‘Trans-Asian Networks: Continuity and Change’.

Opening remarks were made by the UBD Dean of FASS, Associate Professor Dr Noor Azam Othman and the University of Malaya (UM), Dean of FASS Datuk Professor Dr Danny Wong Tze Ken.

UBD Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research) Associate Professor Dr Abby Tan Chee Hong, officiated the opening ceremony, attended by the deans and directors of the faculties, institutes, centres, and offices at UBD.

Associate Professor Dr Gary Jones delivered a keynote speech on ‘The Future of the Past: 35 years of UBD-UM bilateral relations’. The keynote covered the Sultanate and UBD’s changing relationship with Malaysia and Universiti Malaya.

Collaborations, including two major conferences on bilingualism, “have had real impact on how the teaching of English language has changed in the country’s education system”, said Dr Jones.
