Indonesia reports 5,001 new Covid-19 cases, 270 more deaths; total cases now above 4.16 million

JAKARTA, Sept. 11 (Xinhua): The number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 5,001 within one day to 4,163,732, with the death toll adding by 270 to 138,701, the country's Health Ministry said on Saturday.

According to the ministry, 7,586 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of patients recovering from Covid-19 to 3,909,352.

On Saturday, Indonesia received more Chinese ready-to-use Sinovac vaccines through the COVAX Facility multilateral scheme, and 500,000 ready-to-use doses of Janssen vaccines on the same day from the Dutch government.

The emergency use authorization for Janssen vaccine was recently approved by the country's drug and food authority BPOM.

At a virtual press conference on Saturday, Indonesia's Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono said that the government has now received more than 232 million doses of vaccines since last December.

To date, at least 41.53 million people in the archipelago have received two shots of vaccines, while 72.24 million have taken the first doses, the ministry added.

Indonesia is targeting to vaccinate 208.26 million people.

For the record, Indonesia has announced earlier this week that the country's Covid-19 vaccination drive even after the government hit the so-called milestone of 100 million jabs, about one fourth of the total shots needed to fully vaccinate the target population. - Xinhua
