Brunei seizes over 4,000kg of dubious meat

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Halal Food Control Division at the Syariah Affairs Department recently seized 4,754.22 kilogrammes of frozen Allana meat from an abattoir in the Mulaut area, for not having a halal import permit.

The committee of inspectors and enforcement officers from the Halal Food Control Division were conducting an inspection at an adjacent slaughterhouse on Monday (April 19), when they received a public tip-off about meat smuggling activities at one of the abattoirs in Kampong Mulaut.

A check of the premises revealed the frozen meat being stored in 17 baskets. The authorities also recovered 224 plastic bags containing chicken meat, as well as cattle meat, bones, lungs and tendons of dubious halal status.

Meanwhile, several boxes bearing the Allana label had been set on fire, in an attempt to remove the evidence. After putting out the fire, the boxes were seized as proof by the authorities.

Enforcement officers from the Bandar Seri Begawan branch of the Halal Food Control Division were dispatched to the scene for further action, along with enforcement personnel from the Royal Customs and Excise Department and the Royal Brunei Police Force. - Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network
