PETALING JAYA: Siti Aqilah Farhana Draman won Malaysia a silver medal after an impressive performance in the women's 86kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Thursday (July 30).

Aqilah had to endure a tense wait in the final at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo before India's Martina Devi failed with her final clean and jerk attempt of 146kg.

Martina's disappointment was compounded after she finished fifth with a total of 245kg, including 105kg in the snatch, behind New Zealand's Tui Alofa Patolo despite both lifters posting the same total.

Earlier, Canada's Etta Love successfully lifted 144kg in the clean and jerk, but it was not enough to overtake Aqilah. She settled for bronze with a total of 250kg, having lifted 106kg in the snatch.

Aqilah completed all six of her lifts to finish with a total of 253kg, made up of 113kg in the snatch and 140kg in the clean and jerk.

England's Emily Campbell comfortably retained her Commonwealth Games title with a Games record total of 278kg, lifting 115kg in the snatch and setting another Games record with 163kg in the clean and jerk.

The weightlifting team had already won five gold medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games through Aniq Kasdan (60kg), Aznil Bidin (65kg), Erry Hidayat (79kg), Hafizuddin Roslin (88kg) and Syahmi Nor Ghazali (94kg), along with a bronze from Irene Jane Henry in the women's 48kg event.
