Thousands evacuate ahead of tropical storm in the Philippines


MANILA, Feb 20 (dpa): Thousands of people in the southern Philippines fled their homes ahead of a tropical storm expected to bring heavy rains and trigger landslides, officials said on Saturday.

More than 12,700 residents from 12 towns in the province of Surigao del Sur province, 835 kilometres south of Manila, were ordered to evacuate homes in low-lying areas and near the coast.
