BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 27 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Restrictions to curb Covid-19 since March 2020 has temporarily reduced greenhouse gas emissions in Brunei Darussalam with a reduction in daily activities.
Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi Haji Gafar as Co-Chairman of the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change revealed this at the launch of the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy at the Banquet Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office.
The minister said there was a 36 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector in the first quarter of the year, compared to last year. For the same period, there was an increase of seven per cent in the residential sector.
For the land transportation sector, greenhouse gas emissions declined by 11 per cent and a further eight per cent in March and April. Emissions from the aviation sector dropped 75 per cent in April.
The minister said, “The temporary reductions maybe short-lived but it shows the possibilities of managing daily lives in a less carbon intensive way. As we ramp up our activities in the weeks to come, it is an opportunity to re-examine our operations again.”
Brunei also reported no new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday with the national tally of cases standing at 141.
It marked the 81st consecutive day without new cases since May 7.
According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, no active cases are being treated at the National Isolation Center.
Meanwhile, 462 individuals are undergoing mandatory isolation at the monitoring centers provided by the government, who have arrived in the country after traveling abroad.
There have been three deaths resulted from Covid-19 in Brunei and a total of 138 patients have recovered. - The Borneo Bulletin/Asian News Network
