Brunei's 90's soccer star featured in FIFA-Asean campaign

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 25 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei Darussalam former national soccer star Rosanan Abdullah Samak has been featured in the BeActive campaign, jointly launched by the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) recently.

The campaign, which unites Asean football personalities, aims to encourage Asean citizens to practise a healthy and active lifestyle amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Rosanan led the campaign alongside football stars including Cambodia’s Cheavey Ban, Indonesia’s Andritany Ardhiyasa, Laos’s Keoviengphet Liththideth, Malaysia’s Mohamad Aidil Zafuan, Myanmar’s Myat Noe Khin, Philippines’ Inna Palacios, Singapore’s Hariss Harun, Thailand’s Chanathip Songkrasin and Vietnam’s Do Hung Dung.

The football personalities delivered messages to raise awareness of three themes namely physical fitness, sanitation as well as mental health and well-being.

In the nearly two-minute long video released by FIFATV, Rosanan called for the community to be active to help achieve the maximum health potential of the Asean people.

He added, “We are diverse, but if we stick together, we will surely get stronger. Be active, tomorrow and always!”

Rosanan, a key member in the Brunei team that triumphed in the Malaysia Cup in 1999, said, “Whatever the circumstances, friends or foes, we need to stick together. We have to keep our distance, without losing our focus.”

The former international highlighted ways of stating active as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), including taking part in an online exercise class, dancing, stretching and conditioning, jumping rope exercises and muscle strength and balance training.

Meanwhile, President of National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) Pengiran Haji Matusin bin Pengiran Haji Matasan said that the campaign represents an initiative by Asean and FIFA during these unprecedented times amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The president said, “Rosanan is a Brunei football icon, being a member of the Brunei team that emerged champions of the 1999 Malaysia Cup. His football personality hopes to induce and motivate our people especially the football fans on how to stay healthy and active during this difficult times.

“The Asean Football Federation (AFF) and FIFA urge the different nationals to be active and healthy and to be united in tandem with the Asean Vision.”

Describing Haji Mohammad Rosanan as a football ambassador and inspiration, he said, “Hopefully, footballers young and old and the citizens can take the lead.” - Borneo Bulletin/Asian News Network
